Back Pain

Suffering from Back Pain

Unfortunately, back pain is exceptionally common, affecting 8 in every 10 adults at some time in their lives. Low back pain is an especially frequently occurring condition, coming on sharp and painful, for apparently no reason at all.

Back pain can be extremely debilitating, but there is no need to suffer. Chiropractic care can dramatically reduce your pain while restoring your range of motion, allowing you to get back to the activities that mean the most to you.

Many people turn to over the counter painkillers or ask their doctor for a prescription, but research shows that chiropractic care is one of the safest and most effective solutions for back pain.

Possible Causes of Back Pain

Sprain/Strain

A sprain is a ligament injury, while a strain is a muscle or tendon injury. Sprains and strains may be caused by trauma, such as a fall or an automobile accident, as well as by poor body mechanics.

Herniated or bulging disc

When a disc becomes herniated or bulging, its contents begin to spill out through its protective outer layer. This can cause diffuse back pain, which may become severe if it causes nerve compression. Sciatica is a particularly common type of compressed nerve pain.

Degenerative disc disease

This progressive disorder changes the height and elasticity of the intervertebral discs, which can lead to disc herniation and the development of painful bone spurs.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction

The sacroiliac (SI) joints are located at the junction between the spine and the pelvis and are supported by ligaments. When these joints move too much or do not move enough, severe lower back pain that radiates down the leg is common.

Sciatica

The symptoms of sciatica are quite familiar to many people. It is identified by a sharp pain that starts in the lower back or buttocks, and then travels down to one or both legs. It may be associated with numbness, burning, or tingling sensations. What people may not realize is that it is a symptom – an indication that something is wrong. The problem that causes sciatic pain is often a misaligned vertebra in the spine, herniated or bulging discs.

Foraminal Stenosis

The foramen is an opening in the spine through which nerves pass and connect with the rest of the body. When this opening is compressed, the foramen can exert pressure on the nerves it contains and disrupt their function, which may cause pain, numbness, tingling or muscle weakness.

While the condition has a wide range of severity from patient to patient, the symptoms associated with this condition can make it difficult to walk or even stand upright.

Psoas tendonitis and spasms

In addition to its contribution to various lumbopelvic problems, the iliopsoas tendon itself is a common source of hip pain, and dysfunction.  Potential problems can range from asymptomatic snapping to painful irritation of the tendon and underlying bursa.

Treating Back Pain Conditions

Spinal adjustments are the primary chiropractic treatment for back pain. Chiropractors use their hands to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint, pushing it beyond its usual range of motion. You may hear popping or cracking sounds as your chiropractor moves your joints during the treatment session. You should experience reduced pain and heightened spinal mobility.

Depending on your particular condition, the experts at Arizona Chiropractic Group & Medical may offer a variety of solutions, in concert with spinal adjustments, to help relieve pain and restore health. Those solutions include physical therapy, massage therapy, and spinal decompression.
